Okukan Karate Brisbane
Brisbane Powerhouse • Shitoryu Karate-Do
OKUKAN at Brisbane Powerhouse is a volunteer-run, satellite school. Founded by Sensei Sandra in 2010, the current karate instructors are Sensei Sandra’s first students. Sensei Sandra travels from Melbourne to Brisbane throughout the year to conduct ongoing student assessments and gradings.
Our Brisbane dojo lives at the amazing Brisbane Powerhouse, a local cultural icon situated next to the Brisbane river and close to Brisbane’s CBD.
Our Brisbane Instructors
Sensei Trevor comes to us from New Zealand…Australia’s favourite nearby land! He’s a well rounded, very fit, mature teacher with experience in Shotokan and Shitoryu (one of his children was part of New Zealand’s National Team)! Sensei Trevor teaches our Karate for Grownups classes.
Senpai Madina is our youngest instructor. She is a university student, a business owner and a martial artist with an inspirational demonstration of discipline. Senpai Madina looks after our children’s lessons in Brisbane, as she is wonderfully kind and patient with young students, and does ongoing assessments to gather their readiness for changing belts. Senpai Madina recently completed her coaching accreditation with the Australian Karate Federation.
Senpai Madina was just amazing! She was so patient, but firm enough to keep my son’s attention as he got tired by the end of the lesson.Parent
Sensei Rebecca is a founding student at Okukan with vast knowledge of queenslands rules and regulations in relation to working with children -and a hardcore enthusiast for all things Japan! Sensei Rebecca and her husband, Sensei Nick, have been a great support for the development of our school.
Sensei Nick is a fun teacher with fantastic student rapport! He has an impressive retention for kata and is a great source kata knowledge for our students. Sensei Nick is now responsible for covering instructors if they are way and for organising gradings.
